The current design will only stay as long as it takes me to update my old code to get it to take advantage of Blogger's new system. Don't know when that'll be.

A few thoughts to make up for the dry spell

Last month was a lot of fun (actually, last year was a lot of fun). In the month of December there was of course Christmas, which was very nice with Caleb and Alec back home. The party at my parents' home was great, as was the college/youth party at the new Fellowship Hall. I got a pseudo dart board from the gift exchange of which I am particularly fond having traded a ghastly looking pink and furry cat ornament for it. Saw a lot of friends who'd come back for the break and enjoyed some time off work.

Now that the fun is over, I'd like to say that things were going back to normal, but that's not the case. I've started three courses through UWF's MBA program, and the workload is doable but daunting. This three day weekend I will spend nearly half of in libraries.

********

Last week I saw Children of Men in Jacksonville with Luke, and tonight I'll be seeing it again with some other friends. That was a really great movie with some of the most beautiful urban warfare cinematography I've ever seen. If CounterStrike were anything like it, I'd be going to CRC as often as some other people I know.

********

I really like the new Blogger. It's very web2.0-ish.

1.07.2007 |  And the radio plays "How to ruin a lifeeeee"

posted by Jon

It's too easy these days. America quickly condemned three lacrosse players from Duke University for the rape of a "dancer" at a party early last year. She picked the three from a line-up and bingo, they're guilty. At least that's how the media portrayed them. Forget the fact that at the prosecutor's request, she was only allowed to pick from a line-up of Duke lacrosse players. Forget the fact that there were cellphone calls placed by the accused at the time of the alleged rape. All that matters is that the "dancer" was African-American and the accusers were moderately wealthy, white, American males. Now even though copious amounts of forensic evidence were found on the "dancer"'s undergarments, they succeed in nothing but proving that none of the accused (nor any of the lacrosse teammates at all) had ever done anything to the "dancer". Two of those boys are still in court for kidnapping and sexual-offense charges just because some whore (and I'm not being flippant) said they should.

Now it goes without saying that these guys are probably not angels, but when Americans are so concerned about PCness that they'd rather ruin the lives of innocent people than offend anybody, that's just messed up.

EDIT: Here's a link if you haven't been following things: Newsweek Exclusive: Duke Lacrosse Player Speaks Out

SO IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE?
So, here's how it works:
1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc)
2. Put it on shuffle
3. Press play
4. For every question, type the song that's playing
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button

Whatever your thoughts on the current state of our union, we at least live in a country that saw fit to honor the 40th anniversery of one of its greatest pastors' ordination on the 9th of October by flying a flag over the Capitol. Thanks to Senator Trent Lott for recognizing Pastor Schneider in this way.

St. Augustine can be a creepy place to begin with, but its creepiness is enhanced by Halloween, and actually gives the occasion some suitable context. During my stay there this weekend I ate breakfast on a strange stone altar, gazed east at the behest of a giant stone chaplain, declined an invitation to a gathering of Zombies, passed by witches, a wolf-man, and a wide and wrinkly Wonder Woman, and ate lunch with the ghost of a gentleman who had killed himself over a hundred years ago (he actually resides within his portrait, often in the company of his dead wife, who was not with him this Saturday). I love St. Augustine, but it's good to be back in the company of the living.
