Within 4 days of buying the Jetta, a driver-side front tire with not enough air pressure blew itself up somewhere between DeFuniak Springs and Tallahassee, taking most of the driver-side bumper cover with it. It will be a true $650 job, not including the hour or so that we spent replacing the tire with a (surprisingly) full-size spare that was found in the trunk. John and David were troopers, though, and John did a bang-up job of finding wire to tie the bulky plastic bumper pieces to the rest of the car. I was bummed about the damage, but didn't spend too much time thinking about it, as we were having a lot of fun otherwise trying to get to Jacksonville Beach. The bumper also took out a raccoon that night, which at the time seemed uproariously funny, but now is only kind of amusing. I love the new car, but man, I hope it doesn't attract as much misfortune on my next roadtrip.

Well, as I'm sure you've heard by now, our President has made his nomination. John G. Roberts Jr. appears to be a Constitutionalist against the murder of babies. Here's hoping the Republicans in our dear Senate have the 불알 to keep the Democrats from screwing this one up.

UPDATE 1039 20 JUL: It appears that the Democrats aren't the only ones unsure of Roberts' position on pretty much anything. Ann Coulter points out that Roberts' commenting on past cases of his does not mean he personally agrees with the positions of his clients. With the new knowledge that Roberts has never publicly stated his own opinion on abortion, I think I'm going to be cautious with my support for this nomination. It would be nice if Roberts is just keeping it all back for the moment to protect himself from a Democratic onslaught, but there's really no way to tell for sure.

Well. This has been a cool discovery. If you pre-order Nickel Creek's new album from Amazon.com, "Why Should The Fire Die?", you can listen to the whole album almost a month before it's even released! Okay, okay. Is it worth it? Um, maybe, but it's not quite so good as their other stuff. You've been warned.

What does that have to do with carrots?

Supposedly, Walt Disney had his body frozen after he died, in hopes of one day taking advantage of scientific advantages in the field of medicine allowing one's frozen remains to be brought back to working condition.

The Daily Show aired a piece on Hurricane Dennis news coverage on their 13 July programme. It was pretty funny....

Golden rod and the 4-H stone
The things I brought you
When I found out you had cancer of the bone

Your father cried on the telephone
And he drove his car to the Navy yard
Just to prove that he was sorry

In the morning through the window shade
When the light pressed up against your shoulder blade
I could see what you were reading

Oh the glory that the Lord has made
And the complications you could do without
When I kissed you on the mouth

Tuesday night at the bible study
We lift our hands and pray over your body
But nothing ever happens

I remember at Michael's house
In the living room when you kissed my neck
And I almost touched your blouse

In the morning at the top of the stairs
When your father found out what we did that night
And you told me you were scared

Oh the glory when you ran outside
With your shirt tucked in and your shoes untied
And you told me not to follow you

Sunday night when I cleaned the house
I find the card where you wrote it out
With the pictures of your mother

On the floor at the great divide
With my shirt tucked in and my shoes untied
I am crying in the bathroom

In the morning when you finally go
And the nurse runs in with her head hung low
And the cardinal hits the window

In the morning in the winter shade
On the first of March on the holiday
I thought I saw you breathing

Oh the glory that the Lord has made
And the complications when I see His face
In the morning in the window

Oh the glory when He took our place
But He took my shoulders and He shook my face
And He takes and He takes and He takes

Last week, I bought on of these...

...survived this...

...by staying here....

I evacuated Dennis with the Williams family. We stayed in a four-story mansion right on the Atlantic. Hung out in Saint Augustine 2 of the nights with John, Josh, Lauren, and Julie. Had a blast. In a couple weeks I'll be headed up to Nashville with John, Jammer, Jonny, and Luke. Should be killer.
