How's that for a small world? 6.27.2006 | Alas, poor wingsposted by Jon14:48 | SAY SOMETHING | My company started a volunteer-basis health awareness program where they actually pay you to get your own nutritionist/health trainer and start gettin' healthy. Well, mine called me last night for the first time and we started working out my plan. I had to agree to stay away from fried foods, cheese, and soda. Soda's not a big deal, since I drink mostly water or coffee anyway, and I can live without cheese (my lactose intolerant stomach will thank me), but I'm going to miss those delicious Cayenne Cafe wings! I'm also trying to eat more greens and reduce my daily calorie intake to 1500. My trainer checks in every two weeks, so I'm thinking this is going to be a good thing for me, having the whole accountability factor and all. Not looking forward to what she has to say about exercise, but I'll board that boat when it gets here. 6.20.2006 | Number Six (not the cylon)posted by Jon08:41 | SAY SOMETHING | Upon hearing my plans to move to Valparaiso (again), this guy told me last week that I move more often than anyone he knows. I can only take him at his word, but this much is true: I have had five separate residences since college. Bluewater Bay, Valparaiso, Bluewater Bay, Blackman, and Crestview. Soon I will be acquiring a sixth. My plan, however, is to make Valparaiso my last stop. I don't know how long I will be in the duplex, but whatever is after that I would really like to be in Val-P. Who wouldn't want to live in a Vale of Paradise? The benefits for me are plenty. I'll be within walking distance to church and 10 minutes from work. The time I will get back is going to make a huge difference. I will have two extra hours added to my afternoons! Plus, if I can keep away from Destin, my gas spending will drop significantly. I can also eat healthier and save money by having control of my own kitchen. Cooking's actually one of the things I'm looking forward to the most. I have been away from my parents' home a lot lately, which has meant lots of money eating out. The first thing I am going to do when I move is stock my kitchen well and buy a cookbook. I recommend Fingers Crossed, which sort of feels like a mix between Phoenix and Tahiti 80 to me. This is more feel-good stuff with a variety of instruments, which seems to be the thing to do these days. myspace.com/aihmusic Labels: music Transporting gas in the trunk of your vehicle could get you this:posted by Jon08:24 | SAY SOMETHING | Happened at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. I bet the explosion was amazing. The paragraphs below (from the e-mail I received about this) explain more. "Ten vehicles were damaged in the parking lot of the hospital by a fire that started in the trunk of a POV. The trunk contained two 5-gallon gas cans filled with gasoline. The Fort Leonard Wood Fire Department suspects that the fumes built up inside the closed truck and then were ignited by an electrical source (taillights, brake lights, etc.). The gas containers did not have the lids on tight. They only had the spouts with caps, which would allow for leakage of vapors. "Fortunately, no one was injured. This incident could easily have caused serious injuries and much greater damage. This should call to our attention the facts that gasoline and other fuels are extremely dangerous and that we must use great care when using, transporting, or storing them." ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
6.06.2006 | New Find #2: Sondre Lercheposted by Jon14:26 | SAY SOMETHING | ![]() Sondre Lerche's Duper Sessions feels like the sort of music that belongs in a hip, upscale piano bar. This guy's got a great voice and he's got just a trace of a Norwegian accent that adds to the album's unique flavor. If you like Sinatra, you may also like Sondre's brand of younger, more polished jazz. I like putting on Duper Sessions when I'm in a chill mood but still want something upbeat. myspace.com/sondrelerche Labels: music 6.05.2006 | New Find: Anathalloposted by Jon17:47 | SAY SOMETHING | ![]() This is the first in a 10-part series of posts about music that I've recently discovered and have found to be enjoyable. I will try to pick stuff you've probably not heard of before, so that means no Sufjan (the one Sufjan-hater that reads my blog should be pleased). Floating World is the latest offering from Mount Pleasant, Michigan's Anathallo. It's fresh, catchy, and has a lot of Japanese-folk-story-inspired songs. It's a little weird, but it's not Polyphonic-Spree-weird, it's more like Sigor-Ros-weird. It's easy to listen to. myspace.com/anathallo Labels: music 6.03.2006 | Great headline in today's paperposted by Jon16:54 | SAY SOMETHING | Now available in Firefox!posted by Jon15:42 | SAY SOMETHING | For the Brodersens and other intelligent Internet users, Gulf Coastal now comes in a tasty Firefox flavor. Of course, I had to partially abandon CSS and stick in a table, but hey, it works. Labels: blogging 6.01.2006 | Tae Guk Giposted by Jon16:32 | SAY SOMETHING | ![]() I've mentioned Tae Guk Gi two posts previous, but I'd like to mention it again in the off-chance that one of you might possibly not have known what I was talking about. Tae Guk Gi is a powerful movie about two brothers who unwillingly get thrown into the Korean War as combatants for the South. Standard themes abound, such as death, love, betrayal, loyalty, sacrifice, and brotherhood, but they are anything but standard in the way in which they are portrayed. While some of the battle scenes may feel a little like the ones in Saving Private Ryan, they pack more emotional effect in Tae Guk Gi. It was released in South Korean theaters in 2004, and it'd be considered a summer blockbuster type of film if it'd been released in the States, only one where the story received just as much attention to detail as did the special effects and A-list actors (they'd better not re-make this with Orlando Bloom). The cinematography, acting, and unfamiliar setting (to us yanks) give Tae Guk Gi a very different and spectacular feel. You can pick this up at Blockbuster or from Netflix. It's well worth your time and money. |
