St. Augustine can be a creepy place to begin with, but its creepiness is enhanced by Halloween, and actually gives the occasion some suitable context. During my stay there this weekend I ate breakfast on a strange stone altar, gazed east at the behest of a giant stone chaplain, declined an invitation to a gathering of Zombies, passed by witches, a wolf-man, and a wide and wrinkly Wonder Woman, and ate lunch with the ghost of a gentleman who had killed himself over a hundred years ago (he actually resides within his portrait, often in the company of his dead wife, who was not with him this Saturday). I love St. Augustine, but it's good to be back in the company of the living.
